Did You know...?

As one legend has it, hopeless romantic St. Valentine literally died for love. Roman Emperor Claudius the Cruel engaged his country in so many wars that he had trouble recruiting enough soldiers. He believed that many prospective warriors were refusing to fight so that they could remain with their wives and familes, so he outlawed marriage. Valentine, a priest, secretly married soldiers to their beloveds before the men left for war. In 269 AD, the emperor discovered Valentine's secret ceremonies, threw him in jail, and sentenced him to death.

While imprisoned, Valentine fell in love with his jailer's blind daughter and wrote sonnets for her in ink he squeezed from violets. His gift of love cured her of her blindness. Unfortunately the jailer clubbed Valentine to death when the miracle was found out.

Two hundred years later, disturbed that Christians observed February's lusty ode to the pagan fertility god Lupercia, Pope Gelaius deemed Valentine a saint. He hoped that Valentine's example might put forth a more pristine, ideal model of dedication to love. Valentine's Day traditions today run the gamut -- from innocent exchanges of flowers and handmade cards to lover's racy suprises from Frederick's of Hollywood...
